And then we usually ask for volunteers to stand in our Voting Champion election. We ask them these things:

  • their full name;
  • their favourite colour;
  • the name they have chosen for their political party;
  • and the picture they want for their party symbol, so that we can make a ballot paper.

People at our workshops have had lots of different names for their parties, for example the Doctor Who Party; the Disco Party; the Pizza Party; the James Bond Party; the Happy Party.

Click on the picture of a ballot paper to see 2 examples of one we have done (word doc).

On the third page there is a blank ballot paper which you can use for your own election.

We have a small printer which we take to workshops so we can print our ballot papers.  You could use the blank ballot paper to write your candidates' names if you don't have a printer.

On the 4th page there is a ballot paper with colours on it, if you want to choose a colour to represent each person.  This means you don't need to have any writing at all.  This will not look like a real ballot paper.

After we have found our Voting Champion volunteers, we usually show a 10 minute DVD called "Democracy?  You Decide: An Introduction to Parliament."  This features the comedian  Danny Wallace.  It has a lot of information in it, but it's good fun and most people enjoy it too, even if they don't understand every single bit.

If you would like a copy, you need to contact the Parliamentary Education Unit. Click on the picture of the DVD to find how to contact the Parliamentary Education Unit.
