Workshop: People with high support needs

We have run a workshop with people who have high support needs and who find it more difficult to communicate.

We adapted the workshop by doing these things:

  1. 1. We laminated posters we use.
  2. 2. We had pictures with velcro that could stick to the posters.
  3. 3. We chose 6 different issues which we knew the group was most interested in. These were: Transport; Going out to eat; Communication; Leisure Activities; Socialising; and Feeling Safe.
  4. 4. We used sounds to demonstrate these 6 things as follows: a car setting off for transport; the sounds of a restaurant for going out to eat; a telephone ringing for communication; a crowd of people at a football match for leisure activities; a group of people having a good time for socialising; a police siren for feeling safe.
  5. 5. We also had objects that people could hold, like a policeman's hat, a mobile phone, and a toy car.
  6. 6. We chose 5 of the voting stages, so that voting did not feel too complicated.
